Week Without Walls

Each year, students grades 6 through 11 engage in a WWW programme with the aim to achieve extended learning outside the 'walled' classrooms, combining service, creative and active components. WWW this year is going to be the last one for our grade (T_T) and we are putting much emphasis on a service component, as we hope to continue interactions and service with tsunami-affected schools that were set up after the 2004 disaster, in Hambantota area.

Before the Winter break, a number of us got togther to discuss our plans to make this trip successful. Two of the members already visited the area with Mr. Lockwood to check out the situation and determine what equipments are needed and what we would need to plan beforehand. Thus, much of our advisory sessions were focused mainly on deciding different groups (Painting, Maintenance, Playing with kids, Murals, Gift etc) and their groups  as well as planning in detail.

I am the leader of the mural group of 11.2, the SHI group and yesterday, our group(Annie, Yuko and Jakov) had a meeting with some finalized designs that each one had been working on for a while. We have sent the request for the colors as well as our decisions to Mr. De Silva. Working with the mural group as well as the plannign group and the whole grade required me to display responsibility, perseverance and collaboration in order to express opinions, come up with practical ideas and initiate plans for a successful service activity.
